Illuminate Her Foundation began as a passion project with a singular goal: to empower and educate 500 girls in rural areas of Ekiti and Oyo State, Nigeria about menstrual hygiene and reproductive health. What started as a small initiative revealed a much larger need within the community, inspiring us to think beyond our initial scope.
The first phase of our project was supported by personal funds and generous contributions from the University of Northampton for 500 handbooks written in English and Yoruba, the main language of our target communities. Alongside donations from friends and family through a GoFundMe platform, this collective effort allowed us to reach our initial target, providing vital education and resources to over 500 girls.
During this initial phase, it became evident that the demand for our outreaches far exceeded what we had anticipated. The positive impact on the lives of these girls highlighted the urgent need for a sustainable and long-term approach to our mission, as seen in one of the communities where only 3 out of 100 (2%) girls had seen sanitary pads before.
Recognizing the importance of sustainability and the potential to reach more girls and women not just in menstrual hygiene but also in skill acquisition and education, we decided to formally register as a nonprofit organization in Nigeria. This transition marked a significant milestone for us, enabling Illuminate Her Foundation to expand our reach and impact.
Since becoming a registered organization, we have continued to grow, touching the lives of countless girls and women across Nigeria. We have expanded our programs to include skill acquisition, educational support, and community engagement initiatives, creating comprehensive solutions for the challenges our beneficiaries face.
Today, Illuminate Her Foundation is committed to empowering girls and women through education (health and other areas), skill acquisition, and resource provision. Our journey from a small project to a recognized organization is a testament to the power of community support and the profound need for our work.
